Overcoming The Fear of OET 2.0 Reading

It is completely understandable if you really do not like reading and answering at the same time. But when you are attempting an OET then preparation is compulsory. In this article, we will discuss tips of overcoming the fear of OET 2.0 reading.

From the September 2018, OET sub-test reading will have 3 parts to test the reading skills of the candidate.

OET sub-test reading

The allotted time to complete all 3 parts is one hour. This means that you need to write answers for part B and C in the answer sheets and part A will be allotted only 15 minutes of the one hour.

The good news is reading sub-test will not be subject-related or profession-related. Just strategies the time is given and you will sail through just fine and hopefully overcome the fear of OET 2.0 reading
.
Reading Part A -

•    There will be 4 short texts given and 20 questions from these will be asked. These texts will usually be general ones which you would ask patients. Nothing based on research, case studies or subject will be asked here in this part. Skim through the information provided and look for keywords in the text. The keyword will help you decide the relevance of information. This will help you navigate through the process of reading faster.

•    The other questions will be short answer or fill the gap types. As you have already skimmed through the texts and identified keywords you will have a good idea of what the answers are or where to look for them. You will need to fill the words from the texts into the gaps and this means you don’t have to worry about grammar or adjective/verb. Keep an eye on the time as well.

Reading Part B -

Part B and C take up to 45 minutes and all the questions here are multiple type questions. Coming to part B, the six texts which are presented will be from professionally related to medicine. They will be procedures, injure or instructions. One question and three possible answers will be given so you have to choose the correct option.

•    In part B, understanding every word is not important. The question asked will be able to give you an idea about what the answer should be. Skim through the text and identify the content. Focus on meaning and not specific words. Also, the tone or language of the answer will not be similar to the text.

•    Time is of the essence here. If you are unable to find the answer, move on! Pondering over one question will not help you.

Reading Part C-

•    The texts in part C will be longer and will have eight multiple type questions and the number of possible answers will be 4. The texts will be inspired from journals and websites which will be directed towards general health care. Again since the information in texts will be general, medical or subject knowledge is not required. The questions of text will try to evaluate your thinking capability hence will be aimed towards interpretation and point of views. To focus is key here and answers lie in details. Causes, effects, suggestion and emphasis and comparisons are a few things to be recognized in order to answer correctly.

•    The two other questions will ask you the meaning of words or phrases. This means the answer is more than just one word synonym. You have to contextualize the phrase or word according to the writer.

Overcoming the fear of OET 2.0 reading might be possible with just random practice. Take out time for mock tests and access yourself.
