OET For Nurses Communicating With Patients

Nurses play a bigger role when it comes to patient’s healthcare. It has to be aligned with the needs of the patients. A good nurse always understands what the patient may need in order to cope up with varied types of medical situations.

A good nurse who is able to assess patient needs and communicate clearly will definitely have no problem in gaining success in OET. Online OET Speaking Sub-Test will require the nurses to play their role, interact with the patient or the client (during the role-play).

The success in OET speaking depends largely on how effectively the nurse assesses the patient’s concerns or the needs. The nurse will have to be capable enough to identify the preferences of the patients and be ready to learn and support the patient anytime he/she wants.

 Getting Started

The first step is to find out what the patient may require. Your OET card will provide some basic details about what your role should be, what type of problems the patient has, what information you may possibly have to collect from the patient, etc. There will be some pointers for you and you will have to be intelligent enough to collect the information which can help you get to know the patient well.

Remember, you will have to talk to the patient and gather information. You do not have to just sit and make assumptions observing the patient.  By asking the right set of questions you can get to the root of the problem and then you will be able to provide better suggestions and recommendations.

 Need to establish a rapport

You will have to focus on building rapport with the patient. Most of the nurses do not pay attention to this. They just start the conversation. They begin asking questions  and try to get the answers they need. This can be considered a cold way. Your examiner may not expect this from you. Rather, you will have to be friendlier to the patient. You will have to be good at building the relationship with the patient and provide personalized care and support. The way you talk, the way you behave will also be taken into consideration. So, be careful. Make eye contact with the patient. Make the patient feel more comfortable. Pay attention to what the patient is saying. Show personalized concerns. Show that you are there to support the patient. You will have to be good at gaining the trust of the patient.

Be good at identifying the patient's perspective

In order to get a good score in the OET, you will have to be good at identifying the patient’s perspectives too. Talk to patients about problems, fears, possible misconceptions, worries, etc. This vital information can help you chart out a better approach to dealing with patients.
