OET Speaking Professional Etiquettes

What qualities are needed to succeed in OET? If you are a nurse then you really need to have some special qualities. You may have great clinical, management and leadership skills. But, do you have professional etiquette which is considered a more critical link for success in OET.  

Etiquette is not just about good manners. It is an important tool that can help you cultivate good relationships. As a nurse, you are expected to build good relationships with your patients. This is what you exactly do in your OET as well. The real workplace scenarios or situations are created with the sole purpose to analyse how well you can deal with the patients. Of course, it is the test of English but still it is also important that you should display professional etiquettes too. 
As a nurse you are expected to have an attitude of kindness, and consideration. You need to have common sense to act in a correct way, taking into account the situation.  

During your OET speaking test you are expected to show these useful skills as well. The way you talk will certainly be the most important criterion.  
Introducing yourself 

Feel confident when introducing yourself. You do not have to wait for someone to initiate the talk. You will have to break the ice. The best way is always to put your hand out for a firm handshake. You can say your name in a more confident voice.

Example: Hi, I am Matha. I am the staff nurse. You can call me for help anytime.    

Remember, in most of the cases, it will be the nurse who will have to speak first. Your patient (your interviewer wil play the role of the patient or the client) may not take the initiative to start the conversation.

Keeping conversations on track

You need to learn the art of keeping the conversation on track. In your OET speaking sub test it is possible that the patient (the interlocutor, or the interviewer) may try and ask you some questions that you may find challenging or difficult to explain. But, even if you do not know what to say, you will have to find a way out to answer them in a different way.    

Your body language

Your body language forms an important part of your communication with the patient during your OET. When making conversation, you need to focus more on the attitude and condition of the patient. You need to invest a lot of care in your words. If you slouch or do not look at the patient directly then this might make the patient feel bad. This will also make the conversation more difficult.  Keep a sincere, friendlier smile on your face. Don’t make a fist or wring your hand. Move with real confidence and with real purpose.
