Linguistic Criteria

Strong hold over English language is very important. This is the first thing that the assessors will focus on. Following are the linguistic criteria in the OET speaking sub-test.

Make use of the correct grammar. Do not make mistakes when you speak.

Intelligible or Not

Everything will be counted - the way you pronounce, the accent you will use, the intonation. How clearly you speak. How well your listeners can understand from what you are saying.

Fluency

Fluency defines speed. But, there is a misconception prevalent in the OET test market. Most of the test takers think that they will have to speak fast in front of their interviewers. But, that is wrong. Speaking fast is not fluency. Rather, you are expected to speak more calmly and with words that are very clear for the listeners. You do not have to speak too fast or to slow. Focus on speaking more calmly but without long pauses.

Appropriateness

Did you make use of the most appropriate words or not? Are you using the right language that conveys the given thoughts in the right manner? Does the listener understand your language, your thoughts?

Clinical Communicative Criteria Of The OET Speaking Sub-Test

Relationship-building

How are you to your clients? Are you passionate about your job? Are you speaking in the right tone? How do you behave? Does your client/patient like the way you speak, the way you provide the support? Do you demonstrate empathy? Do you listen to your client/patient?

Understanding Patients

Are you good at understanding your patients/clients? Are you good at incorporating the patient’s perspectives? Are you capable enough to involve the patient in the conversation?

Structuring Information

Are you good at giving the information in the right manner? Is the information organized or not? Does it convey the intended message in a clear way or not?

Gathering Info about the patient or the client

You will have to be good at explaining things the patient or the client may ask. Apart from this, you should also be good at questioning. You should ask questions to learn more about eh the needs of the patients or the client.

Remember, your assessor will not count how many mistakes you have made in your OET speaking or writing sub-tests. Rather, they will assess the score based on the criteria they have.
