OET Speaking Top 7 Donts

Good communication is a key to success in healthcare. Your patients or the clients would expect you to be a good communicator. If you are not good at communicating your ideas then it can be very much difficult for you to deal with the patients or the clients.
 
Therefore, it is always important that you should learn to be a good speaker or a communicator. 

In your OET speaking sub-test you will have role-plays. You will have to play your role. You do not have to act. You will have to showcase how good you are at dealing with the patients in the real world. 

But, your interviewer will be playing the role of your patient or the client and the patient or the client can be anyone - a 16 years woman or a 60 years old woman. You need to know how to deal with all types of patients. 

Don’t interrupt your patient 

When your patient explains something to you, be patient and listen to your patient. You do not have to interrupt.  Interrupting your patient is very bad. You will have to listen to understand what the patient really needs. 

Don’t talk too fast 

You should not talk too fast. Try to speak slowly so that your patient or the client can understand you well. Often, misunderstanding occurs because of not properly communicating. Nine times out of ten, it is the result of speaking fast. So, be as slow as you can speak to your patients. 

Don’t have to show sympathy 

You will have to learn to be more empathetic towards your patients or the clients.  Your talk shall not show that you feel sympathy. 

Don’t use medical terminology 

When you speak, use simple language. This is the key to more understandable communications.  Your patient may not understand medical terminology. You shall not use medical phrases or word-groups. This will further confuse them. Even if you come across a situation where you have to use one or two terms, then try to provide an explanation too. This will make the patient understand your conversation well. 

Don’t be offensive 

Sometimes, the patient may not show much interest in listening to you. He or she may not accept your suggestions. So, in such cases, you do not have to be offensive. You will have to be more kind to make the patient understand. 

Don’t show negative body language 

Your body language should be positive to show that you are really interested in listening to the patient and that you are there to help the patient out. A positive body language will eventually lead to a good score in your OET speaking test. 

Don’t criticize 

You do not have to criticize your patient or the client for anything they may have done. Your role-play will never demand such a thing. Rather, you will be asked to deal with such tough situations more calmly and in a more organized way.
