OET Writing Assessment Criteria & Level Descriptors

If you wish to score higher in your OET 2.0 Writing Sub-Test then you really need to know more about the level descriptors, the assessment criteria for the test.  Your score is assessed taking into account five major factors.

 

There are basically five criteria. They are 

  • Overall Task Fulfillment 
  • Appropriateness of Language 
  • Comprehension of Stimulus 
  • Linguistic Features (Grammar & Cohesion) 
  • Presentation Features (Spelling, Punctuation & Layout)

Task Fulfillment

The candidate has not provided any answer

This is almost equivalent to non-existent

2

Multiple errors. Not proper communication. Restricted linguistic resources. Unfinished. Not properly written. Insufficient information. Very brief

3

Fairly completed the task. Significant errors. Limited linguistic resources. Answer is too long. Answer is too short. 

4

Have completed the task well but restricted in range. Lapses and errors.  Provided a very long answer. Provided very short answer.

5

Fulfils the task. There are some errors. Answer is slightly short. Answer is slightly long.

6

Mostly appropriate register. Appropriate tone and lexis. There are some inaccuracies but they do not  have direct effect on presentation. Clearly organized. There are minor lapses in sequencing.

Completely appropriate tone, register and lexis for the context. Logically organized. No errors.

Almost complete understanding of given task or the stimulus material. Clearly followed task instructions. Omissions or irrelevancies are there but they do not impeded communication.

Linguistic Features (Grammar & Cohesion)

Mostly accurate use of a range of grammatical structures. Fair use of cohesive devices. Errors are present but not intrusive.

Shows limited control of how words shall be spelled, how the punctuation shall be. Inaccuracies are noticeable and they are intrusive Letter layout is not appropriate.

There are some inaccuracies in punctuation and spellings but intrusive). Use of appropriate layout for the letter.

Demonstrate the use of mostly accurate punctuation and spelling. Occasional errors (but not intrusive). Use of appropriate layout for the letter.
