Use Adverbs Smartly in OET

OET reading, speaking or listening may not pose a big challenge for you but when it comes to writing subtest, it is a different story.

Even the best of the candidates fear it. Here, in this post, we have listed down some of the basic errors that are related to the use of the Adverb in the OET writing subtest.

Incorrect sentence: The patient was serious injured.
Correct sentence: The patient was seriously injured.

Incorrect sentence: The patient responded to the situation intelligent.
Correct sentence: The patient responded to the situation intelligently.

Incorrect sentence: He behaved selfish.
Correct sentence: He behaved selfishly.

Incorrect sentence: Martha is terrible sorry about this.
Correct sentence: Martha is terribly sorry about this.

Incorrect sentence: He is doing good.
Correct sentence: He is doing well.

Incorrect sentence: He fell down from the staircase and hurt herself bad.
Correct sentence: He fell down from the staircase and hurt himself badly.

Incorrect sentence: This is special for you.
Correct sentence: This is specially for you.

Incorrect sentence: It doesn’t look safely.
Correct sentence: It doesn’t look safe.

Incorrect sentence: The patient looked at the staff agry.
Correct sentence: The patient looked at the staff angrily.

Incorrect sentence: The patient said that the time with the friends passed quick.
Correct sentence: The patient said that the time with the friends passed quickly.

Incorrect sentence: The staff worked continuous.
Correct sentence: The staff worked continuously.
Incorrect sentence: Happy married to Susan.
Correct sentence: Happily married to Susan.

Remember, most adverbs end in LY.

Examples:

Serious - Seriously.
Happy - Happily
Terrible - Terribly
Awkward - Awkwardly
Intelligent - Intelligently
Final - Finally
Eventual - Eventually

But, remember, not all adverbs end in LY. For example, there are some common conjunctive adverbs that do not have LY ending.

Elsewhere
Otherwise
Nonetheless
Then
Therefore
Thus etc.

Proofreading is of utmost importance.
