The test is specially developed for the healthcare professionals like nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, dieticians, etc. Each and every task will reflect some kind of medical activity or scenario from real workplace situations.
The test will be focused more on assessment of all four major language skills such as listening, reading, writing and speaking. The score will be benchmarked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). OET will use both numeral (from 0 to 500) and a letter (from A to E) to score the performance of the candidate in the test.
Why shall you take this test?
If you have plans to practice in an English country then it is necessary that you should take an English language test. You will have the option to pick from various English language tests but the most preferred test for the healthcare professionals is OET as it is accepted by a large number of hospitals, healthcare agencies and organizations in most of the English countries.
You need to have a strong hold over English if you have plans to work in an English-speaking country because, communication is the first most important thing in medical profession. You will be able to understand your patient and make patients understand. Generally, poor communication between healthcare professionals and patients or the clients lead to trouble. If your language is strong then you will be able to communicate with anyone with no fear.
Therefore in OET, only real challenges are included. For instance, during your speaking test, your speaking abilities will be assessed through role-plays. You will be asked to play your role as a doctor, nurse, or physiotherapist. The interview or the interlocutor may become your patient or the client. You will have to showcase how good you are at dealing with the patients, how well you can convince patients or make them feel more comfortable, clear their donuts, help them understand complex medical procedures, etc.
Similarly your listening test, reading and writing tests will also lay more focus on assessment of your language in context with your medical profession.
Before you take your real OET, you really have to spend some practicing. It is always good to work on some sample tests before your real test. This will give you an idea of the complex nature of the test. You will also improve your skills and eventually get a good score in the test.
